PLUNNING AVOCADO TREES

The right age to start pruning an avocado tree is usually when it is **around 1 to 2 years old**. At this stage, the tree has developed a strong enough root system and trunk but is still young and flexible, making it easier to shape. Here's a breakdown of when to prune based on the tree's age:

### **1-2 Years Old:**

- Light pruning can be done to encourage a strong central leader (main trunk) and a good structure. You may also remove any lower branches or suckers near the base to encourage upward growth.

- Focus on shaping the tree rather than heavy pruning.

### **3-4 Years Old:**

- You can start more structured pruning to maintain the shape of the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches.

- Begin to focus on opening the canopy for better sunlight penetration and air circulation.

### **After 4 Years:**

- By this time, the tree should be mature enough to handle more extensive pruning.

- Prune to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and trim back any growth that may interfere with fruit production.

Always ensure that pruning is done during the tree's dormant period (late winter or early spring) to minimize stress and avoid cutting back too much growth at once.
